Project 1 - Creating a Photo Story

New Brunswick

Creating Your Second Project - A Photo Story

Your photo story will make use of the same research material you gathered on the Fact Finder sheet. You may want to focus on a specific part of the topic as opposed to trying to cover too large an amount of material. It is better to have a specific focus that to lose your audience in a sea of details.

Focus On Telling A Story

Your photo story will only be as interesting as the story you are trying to tell. If you just list facts and dates, your story won't engage the audience. Try to focus on exciting details or parts of the story that inspire us and capture our attention. It doesn't matter what year Terry Fox graduated from high school as much as it matters that he continues to inspire people to overcome challenges and fight against cancer even now, years after his death.

Questions to consider
What were this person's greatest accomplishments? What does this invention say about Canada?
What was his or her biggest challenge? Why is this place or thing so special?
What is it about the person that is inspiring? How does your topic contribute to what it means to be Canadian?
What is his or her legacy? If you could leave the audience with one key idea, what would it be?
How will he or she be remembered? What will this person/place/thing mean to future generations of Canadians?
Who has this person influenced? How does this topic impact you personally?

Creating A Story Board

Before you start creating your photo story, you will need to create a story board. A story board is an outline of your story. It includes both the images and text that you are going to use. Working with a story board lets you write and revise your story before you go into the Photo Story program. This improves your story, by letting you focus on what you want to say first. You then save time in Photo Story as you can get straight to the work of laying things out. You will create your story board in Word.

You can download a blank story board template here. Be sure to rename it before you hand it in.

Features to include in your story board
  • A header consisting of your name(s) and the title of your story
  • A table containing, in order, the pictures you will use in your story and the text that will accompany it.
  • Include your sources for your pictures and information. Typically, this is a URL.

Your script needs to be the same as what appears in your Photo Story. If you make changes in your Photo Story because, for example, the script doesn't sound right, be sure to update your script to reflect the changes.
