Activity 2 - Getting Started

New Brunswick

Once You Have A Topic

After you have selected a topic and had it approved, there are a number of steps you will need to follow. You should do the steps in order (steps 4 and 5 can be done in either order). The steps are as follows:

1 Conduct all the necessary research for your site. This includes gathering and saving images, source URLs and other information.
2 Decide how many pages you need and what will go on each page. Then create an image map representing the link structure between all the pages on the site.
3 Plan and layout the look and feel of your site.
4 Create a navigation structure (menu) for your site.
5 Add the information (text, images, links, sources, etc.) for on your pages.

In addition, you will need to test your site, clean up all unused files, be sure all files are organized and properly named. These things can be done throughout the process of creating your site.

1

Researching Your Topic

Your research should include the gathering of information, the collection of images and the recording of sources used in the creation of your site.

Be certain to gather enough information to create a site which is interesting. Avoid having pages with too little or too much going on. The best way to have a good site is to start with good information.

To make sure your research is done properly, including the correct citation of sources, be sure to check out the Internet research tutorial. Your work will be assessed with the assumption that you applied the techniques presented there.

2

Deciding What Will Go On Each Page and
Creating an Image Map of Your Site Layout

In this step, you will create a diagram that lays out all of the pages that will be part of your site. It will also indicate all of the links between pages. This step is necessary to allow you to plan out your site and group your information into appropriate sections.

This step makes use of the program Fireworks. If you are unsure about how to use the program, you should check out the Fireworks tutorial in the Tutorials section. It has a few brief videos to get you up to speed.

These videos cover the process of creating your image map.
