What You'll Create
In this activity, you will create an original web site. You will use many of the techniques you learned in the previous activity to create your site.
Why
Since the Internet is a technology that is likely to figure prominently in your life, it makes sense to try and understand how web sites are created and how they function. By creating your own site, you will be able to explore how to use a web site to communicate. You will also be able to experience the interaction between all of the files that are part of your site.
By creating a web site you will also explore the concepts of design (the look and feel of your site) and content (what information will go on your site). This will give you a more critical eye when evaluating other web sites.
Features to include
- Your site should have a home page and 3-4 other pages. Check with your teacher.
- Use proper file management by naming your pages, folders and other files appropriately.
- Cite your sources (this means providing URLs to web sites).
- Show signs that you have included concepts demonstrated in Activity 1.
- Be sure to include all images and other files that appear in your site.
- Include a page with your image map. (This is explained in the instructions below.)
What should your web site be about?
You are free to create a web site on a wide range of topics. But there a few important limitations.
Requirements for your topic
The topic must be suitable for school. | |
Avoid topics for brand name, trademarked, copyright or otherwise "owned" topics. For instance, since Playstation 3, the Ottawa Senators, and Nickelback are things owned by someone, they're off limits. | |
Similar to #2, don't make your site about your favourite band, actor, or athlete. This doesn't mean you can't make it about music, films or sports; be creative. | |
Be original. Don't recreate some other site. Do not copy and paste any text for use on your web site. If something or someone has a specific web site, then you should probably pick something else. |
Some examples...
Bad idea |
Good idea |
---|---|
World of Warcraft | The evolution of video game systems / What we can learn from video games |
Bon Jovi | What cool bands have in common / how to play the bass |
Ottawa Senators | Famous goal tenders (try to include some non-NHL goalies as the NHL is also a trademark) |
More good ideas...
Photography | My favourite books | Dirt bikes | Cooking | Changes in technology |
School related topics | Dating | Fashion | Dream vacation | Your community |
My life so far... | The history of... | Life in the future | Candy | Pets |
How to make a web site | My Family | Collecting | Bullying | Skateboarding |
Have your topic approved before you continue
Your teacher is the final word on which topics are ok. They may give you additional flexibility on the range of topics. Before you continue, you need to have your topic approved by your teacher.
