Creating A Cover Letter

A cover letter is a letter that accompanies your resume. It gives the potential employer (or other reader) more information about you. As this information will help them to determine if you are the right candidate for the position, you should be positive and focus on your strengths.

Watch for spelling and grammatical mistakes... they could cost you the position. Be sure to proof read your cover letter more than once (and try to have someone else read it as well). It needs to be perfect!

How to have a job-winning cover letter …

  • Spelling, grammar, accuracy and honesty are all as important here as they are with your resume... be careful
  • Your cover letter is your chance to introduce yourself... use it! Show how your skills and experiences make you the right choice
  • Alter your cover letter to specifically address the position you are applying for.
  • Make mention of the organization in your letter, this shows you've taken the time to find out about them.

Quick Tips

The style you will use for your cover letter is a block style (everything lines up on the left hand side of the page).

The spacings are as follows:

  • Between paragraphs (and unless otherwise stated) - 1 space
  • After your address and before "Dear ___," - 2 spaces
  • Between closing line and your typed name - 4 spaces this leaves room for you to sign your name)
